Homemade deodorant

posted in: DIY | 19

One product that we all use on a daily basis at least in the warmer months is the deodorant.

But many of these cosmetic products contain very harmful ingredients and since we do not rinse them off they are left on the skin for hours. The sensitive skin of the underarm and upper breast area can then absorb some of the accumulated toxic chemicals and over time this can lead to serious health problems.

Harmful ingredients that you should watch out for are:

  • Aluminum compounds
  • Propylene glycol: This is a penetration enhancer, it can be more harmful when paired with other chemical additives.  You’re likely to find this in many “natural” deodorants too.
  • Triclosan
  • Steareths

Now, after a lot of research and trying many different homemade recipes, I finally found a a solution that works very well for me and I am so excited to share it with you:

FBAll you need:

  • 2 tea spoons of coconut oil
  • 2 tea spoons of baking powder
  • Essential oils (optional): I add 1 drop of tea tree or 3 drops of lavender oil.

Mix them all together and store your deodorant creme in a jar or container with a screw-top lid.

Voilà, you have your beautiful, healthy deodorant.

  9. I love the idea of a home-made deodorant !
I used to buy only deodorants that didn’t contain aluminum, but I really couldn’t find any that were really efficient. So I just went back to the full-of-nasty-chems ones.
I will definitely give this a try !

    • Dear Iman, Thank you so much for sharing your little story here. I know exactly what you mean by “non-aluminium deodorant not being efficient” because I had the same experience with them :/.
The recipe above really has worked well for me. So it may work well for you too. The traditional deodorants are so harmful that I’d never use them again. XXX Mahshid

  12. Dear Mahshid, you’re right, deodorants oft contain chemical ingredients that can have negative effects on us. On your recipe: What’s the texture of this home made product? How do you feel once spread it under your armpits? How long does it last?
    Thanks a lot!!!
    Happy Saturday!

    • Thank you dear Elena for these great questions. The texture of the product is exactly the same like the coconut oil. So if you keep it in the fridge it will be solid and in the warmth it gets very soft. You just need a tiny bit of that product since it is very oily. Leave it to be absorbed for about 3 minutes. It feels smooth and wonderful 🙂 It keeps me fresh for the entire day. However, everyone’s skin and level of perspiration are different, right? You really need to try and see how long it lasts for you. Please, let me know how it goes? XOXO

  13. Oh wow! Very cool post! Love the idea, might try it one day

  14. I actually stopped using factory processed deodorants. I make mine the same way, but them in a deo bottle and it just works fine
